Paranoid Son

Dear Sara,

My seventeen-year-old son who is usually friendly but somewhat shy has become suspicious of people. He told me that the man across the street has been watching him and he thinks he’s a spy for some government. He’s not exactly sure which one. He also said his teacher at school is part of some secret organization who is out to steal his secrets. I thought at first he was just joking but lately, he seems to be serious about all of this. I’m not sure what to do, take it seriously or not. What do you think? Sometimes he’s OK and sometimes not.

Dear Josie,

If your son is serious about these things he could be having some delusions. He needs a professional to determine this. You could let his doctor know what is going on and set up an appointment to have your son evaluated. If he’s teasing you he probably won’t continue with a professional questioning him and if he has a problem it will be a good thing to find out about it early.
