I had planned to be a stay at home Mom but have returned to work because the economy has affected us and we really need the money. I have had to leave my two girls ages two and four at a daycare. I was really surprised that there are so many overweight kids there. When I was growing up there were only a few kids that were above normal weight. They were the exception rather than the rule. What can I do to keep my kids at a normal weight.
Our lifestyles are changing more as time goes by. With the advent of TV and computers we are becoming more sedentary and as our lives get more hectic, we turn to easy nonnutricious meals and fast food. If you make yourself aware of these trends then maybe you can help your girls have a more healthy lifestyle.
You could start by limiting their TV and computer time. I realize that you will be tired from work and these are good babysitters but your kids need time to play outside and use their imaginations instead of having their entertainment fed to them.
If they don’t use up their calories, then guess what? the unused calories will go to making them fat. In the summer when it’s still light outside after supper then get out and take them for a walk. As they get older maybe they would be interested in gymnastics. Just try to make sure that they are active.
Fast food is easy and the kids love it but when they get used to all the salt and fat they turn their nose up at more healthy food. If you can avoid starting this habit your girls will benefit.
When you shop, try to look for things that are easy to fix but read the labels and try to avoid the high calorie things that are loaded with salt.
At the age your girls are now you still have a lot of control over what they eat. If their taste buds get used to healthy foods with less sugar, salt and fat, they will be more apt to stay in a normal healthy weight range.
