Dealing with a Nocturnal Baby

Dear Sara,

I have a six week old baby girl who seems to have her days and nights mixed up. During the day she wakes up every four or five hours to eat but at night she wakes up and fusses about every hour or two I pick her up and pat her a few minutes and she will go back to sleep or feed her again if it has been three or four hours. I have to go back to work soon so I need to get her to sleep at night, What do I need to do to get her to sleep at night?

Dear Katherine,

Why don’t you try keeping her up more in the day time? She’s at an age now where she should be showing an interest in the things around her. Play with her by dangling things in front of her to see if she will reach for them. Instead of putting her back in her crib, put her in the area where you are working or watching TV.

At night don’t rush in as soon as she fusses a little. She might go back to sleep on her own after fifteen or twenty minutes. If you give her more attention in the daytime and less at night she might be able to change her schedule.
Good luck.
